Learning Can Be Your Competitive Advantage

How many times have you reinvented yourself? Graphic recording is my third career, and it was quite a learning curve to become truly skilled at it. I'm definitely not alone. Most of us will have multiple careers throughout our lives, making learning agility the most important skill we can have.

As freelancers or consultants we have to take it upon ourselves to continue learning new skills to stay relevant in a workforce that's constantly changing. We rely on YouTube, LinkedIn Learning, and Skillshare just to name a few.

If you work for a large organization, it's critical that learning be part of your company's culture. It's up to managers to lead that culture change.

I recently had the pleasure of graphic recording keynote speaker Kelly Palmer, author of "The Expertise Economy". Kelly shared 6 Ways To Create An Amazing Learning Culture, which I think are relevant whether you work for yourself or for a fortune 100 company. They are:

1. Identify the learning culture you want.
2. Create a plan.
3. Give guidance.
4. Make time for learning.
5. Look for learning opportunities.
6. Recognize and reward learning.

The fourth one speaks to me the most. Building in time to learn new skills is a valuable investment in my career, and one I’m intentional about.
