The Human Touch: Why Hand-Drawn Explainer Videos Work Better

Have you ever tried explaining a complex idea only to see your audience's eyes glaze over? I've been there too. That's why I create hand-drawn explainer videos—they transform complicated concepts into short visual stories that people actually remember.

As a graphic recorder, I've witnessed the magic that happens when people see their ideas come to life visually. Studies show viewers retain about 95% of a message when watching a video, compared to just 10% when reading text.

What Makes My Approach Different?

t's all in the hand-drawn element. There's something uniquely engaging about illustrations created by human hands. The imperfections and distinctive artistic choices create an authenticity that polished digital graphics just don't have. The novelty of seeing real artistic work in motion makes people stop scrolling and pay attention.

I recently worked with the California Community Foundation to create a video explaining Equity In Dual Enrollment.  While the video explains what dual enrollment is, it also includes recommendations from students who have been through the program. Telling a story from the student's perspective resonated with everyone from fellow students to teachers to policymakers - all in under two minutes! The foundation now uses this video as a key tool for building understanding and support.

This approach works beyond education, too. From healthcare and technology to fashion brands and environmental initiatives, hand-drawn explainer videos can make any topic more accessible. The combination of thoughtful narration with evolving visuals engages both auditory and visual learning channels, helping viewers process and remember information.
