What advice would you give your younger self in your career?

That’s one question LPL Financial asked participants at their Flagship Focus Conference in San Diego.  Answers were collected on stickies that I synthesized and drew into themes resulting in a large Knowledge Wall at the end of 2 days.

Finished 8’x16’ Knowledge Wall for LPL Financial, illustrated by Alece Birnbach.

Their top themes were:

  • Embrace Change

  • Always Be A Student

  • Believe In Yourself

  • Be Patient

  • Integrity Is All That Matters

Most participants at this event were financial advisors, but their answers are universal.

I’ve been contemplating these themes for myself, and in doing so can’t help but think about how the wisdom I’d share with my younger self could provide a springboard for my future self.

For instance, has there’s ever been a better time to remind ourselves to embrace change, and keep integrity at the forefront?

So what advice would you give your younger self?  How would that advice help your future self?

As summer is wrapping up and we head into new opportunities in the fall, these questions might be worth contemplating.
